What is an Eating Disorder?

Eating challenges that show up sometimes as “picky eating”, eating too little food, too much food, overexercising and spending too much time fixated on not liking or loathing your body. Eating disorders are dangerous brain based illnesses, however, with the right treatment they are very treatable and many people can have full recovery.

Individual Therapy we offer:

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

The goal of ACT is to create a rich and meaningful life while accepting the challenges that come with it. ACT has it’s major emphasis on values, forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, living in the present moment, and accessing a transcendent sense of self. It combines mindfulness, acceptance and commitment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

CBT can help you face your fears rather than avoid them. It can do this by helping you to identify thoughts that  increase your fears and rather than give into them, it helps you to reframe them. CBT can also help understand your own motivations and those of others while helping you use problem solving skills for difficult situations. Overall, it give you a greater sense of confidence and well being.

Exposure and Response Prevention Therapy (ERP)

ERP can help you to tolerate distress rather than turning to compulsive behaviors. It includes education, exposure to the feared circumstances and response prevention techniques. This is a very effective treatment, for instance it has an 80% success rate in people who have OCD.

Temperament Based Therapy with Supports (TBTS)

TBT-S uses talk therapy to help the person with an eating disorder (and their support people) understand how their symptoms can be explained by their temperament.

For example, personality traits such as perfectionism, impulsivity, harm avoidance and determination are common among people with eating disorders.

TBT-S asks: How can you learn to use and express those personality traits productively instead of destructively?
